What has GREEN Team been up to lately? The student-led Willow Springs GREEN Team created an Eco-code, “Paws for the Planet,” for the school.

An "Eco-code" is essentially a mission statement or a set of guidelines that demonstrates a school's commitment to environmental sustainability and improving its environmental performance.

Two bright young minds from Willow Spring Elementary, Luciana Nishanian and Scarlett Lin, have won the regional competition in the prestigious Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision contest! Their project, Electro-BUZZ: Redefining Pollination for a Resilient and Sustainable Future, is now moving on to the national competition.

Electro-BUZZ is a groundbreaking idea that uses smart drones to pollinate plants just like bees. With pollinators struggling and global food demand rising, these drones step in to help farmers and the environment. Powered by solar, wind, and kinetic energy, Electro-BUZZ drones work together to cover large areas efficiently. Their Smart Hive technology tracks pollination, ensuring a sustainable and eco-friendly future for farming.

Luciana and Scarlett’s success in ExploraVision highlights the power of STEM education, creativity, and teamwork. The entire Willow Spring community is cheering them on as they prepare for the next stage of the competition. Congratulations and good luck at nationals!

We did it! Willow Springs Elementary School has been recognized by the National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA program for exceptional achievement in ‘greening’ school grounds, conserving natural resources, and integrating environmental education into curricula.

Sixth-grade ENCORE/STEAM students did an amazing job presenting their Zero Waste projects at the NOVA Outside Student Environmental Action Showcase (SEAS) at NVCC Annandale campus.

The projects included "trashion show" designs made from recycled materials and a PSA video, an informative website on current environmental problems, and a 3D sculpture made from recycled materials promoting green forms of transportation. 

On April 29th, 42 fifth and sixth graders, under the guidance of fifth-grade teacher Ms. Williams and motivated by their participation in the Jason Learning & ISRI Public Service Announcement contest, made a significant impact by engaging with lawmakers to advocate for the recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, a critical environmental issue given the current 5% recycling rate. Their well-prepared presentations to the staff of 17 senators and representatives, backed by thorough research and early morning meetings, highlighted the challenges and solutions related to EV battery waste and demonstrated the students' deep understanding of and commitment to environmental conservation. This initiative showcases youth's powerful role in influencing policy and promoting sustainable practices, serving as an inspiring example of community involvement and environmental stewardship.

Congratulations to Gunjan Sapkota, Kindergarten and First Grade Multiple Disabilities Teacher! She has been recognized as the Region 5 Outstanding New Teacher for the 2023-24 school year. As the Region 5 winner she is now being considered for the Outstanding New Teacher for FCPS along with the winners from the other 5 regions. We are proud to and very grateful to have her as a teacher at WSES!
