5th Grade Medieval Day 2024

Dear Willow Springs families,

We are all making the most of our time together as we head towards the end of this school year. Our teachers and students are filling the days with highly engaging and fun learning opportunities and celebrations. Yesterday, our 5th graders experienced a full day of medieval life to include a parade, sword dancing, parties, and an outdoor market where students bartered for goods.

Our 4th graders have been busy with their learning presentations and have explored a wide array of topics from space to recycling to the afterlife and more. They worked hard conducting research, writing and presenting their learning to an audience.

There is something special happening at every grade level so be sure to ask your children about their special end of year activities.

We hope all of you will be with us here in school until the last day on Wednesday, June 12th. Don't forget it will be an early dismissal day.

We wish all of you a terrific weekend. Thank you for sending us your best every day! #WillowPride

Take care!

Willow Writers Our Willow Writers celebrated the end of the year and the publication of their anthology of stories and poems. This group of students met weekly before school to write under the direction of Mrs. Angie Young, music teacher. Way to go Willow Writers!!

Dear Willow Springs families,

Summertime is just around the corner and we are all eager to say hello to the warm days and slower pace.

We understand that summer is a time to unwind and enjoy a more leisurely pace, and it is also a critical period for fostering wellness and strengthening interpersonal relationships--both of which are essential for your child’s overall development. Here are some suggestions on how you can create a balanced summer that nurtures your child's social and emotional well-being:

  1. Encourage social interaction: Arrange playdates, family gatherings, or community activities to help your child build friendships and develop social skills.
  2. Promote emotional wellness: Create a safe space for your child to express their feelings. Encourage open conversations and support their emotional needs.
  3. Incorporate physical activities: Plan outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or sports to keep your child active and reduce stress.
  4. Foster creativity and curiosity: Encourage hobbies such as painting, reading, or learning a musical instrument to stimulate their minds.
  5. Model positive relationships: Show kindness, patience, and respect in your interactions, as children learn by observing adults.
  6. Maintain a routine: Keep a flexible daily structure to provide stability while allowing time for relaxation.

By thoughtfully planning a summer that emphasizes social and emotional growth, we can help our children develop the skills they need to navigate life with resilience and confidence.

Thank you for sending us your best every day! #Willow Pride

Dear Willow Springs families,

As we rapidly approach the end of this school year, there is so much to look back on and to feel gratitude and joy for. This has been an incredible school year packed full of opportunities for our students and our community to come together to make learning and growing a positive experiences for all. We have accomplished so much because of YOU and the support you give our students and our staff on a daily basis.

We recently celebrated Faculty & Staff Appreciation Week and each day we were showered with treats. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! Included in the weeklong celebration was an opportunity for students to write notes of appreciation to Mr. Taylor. As you can see in the picture above, our students had a lot to say! Mr. Taylor slays all day and he is really nice and kind! :)

Thank you to everyone who attended our PTA meeting last week. We are really looking forward to meeting our new families during the summer for some playground get togethers.

Thank you for sending us your best every day! #Willow Pride

National School Nurse Day

Today, May 8 is National School Nurse Day. is It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.

Willow Springs is very pleased to welcome Mrs. Heather Shrader who is our new Public Health Nurse. She fills the position previously held by Ms. Jessica Bermudez who recently welcomed the birth of her beautiful baby boy. Mrs. Shrader comes to us from a hospital setting and a distinguished career as a nurse. She will be at Willow Springs nearly full time.

Today, we also honor the contributions and dedication of our Clinic Aide, Ms. Susan Waldeck. Ms. Waldeck works full time in our health room and supports us in taking care of all of our students when they are not feeling well.

FCPS appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs and the Clinic Aides for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.

Together, we make Willow Springs a SAFE & HEALTHY place for learning and growing! May PTA Meeting

Dear Willow Springs families,

It feels like April flew by in the blink of an eye! We had so many special events and powerful learning opportunities that kept us busy such as the Fairfax Pyramid Art Show, Willow Wonders Week, fieldtrips, Purple Up! Day, Minion Spirit Day, Farm Animal Day, the reopening of the WSES Farmers Market and more! Wow, what a month it was.

SOL testing begins this week and continues through May 17th for students in grades 3-6. In May, we will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, Bike and Roll to School Day, Beach Bash Spirit Day, and more fieldtrips.

This is such a busy time of year! Remember that it is also important to slow down and relax. Students should continue going to bed on time so that they arrive at school well rested and ready to learn.

We are looking forward to another terrific month together. Let's keep communicating and collaborating so that we finish this year strong.

Thank you for sending us your best every day! #Willow Pride

This Week at Willow Springs

Welcome to Willow Wonders Week!

This week is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating that which makes us all wonders and engaging in activities that bring POSITIVE energy into our lives.

The hope is that this positive energy will expand and elevate our spirits and our growth so that we all finish this year strong and better than ever.

This week is a passion project created by two of our 5th grade students, Lily and Madelyn, who see a need and came up with a plan to address the need.

Today, Lily and Madelyn will be stationed in the lobby near the office handing out new sets of sidewalk chalk to teachers so that students may create beautiful pictures and messages on all the sidewalks and the blacktop. We will surround our school with beauty and positivity.

On Tuesday, teachers are encouraged to take their students outside to eat their snack or even to have lunch outdoors. If your child will be eating lunch outdoors, please send them to school with a towel or a sheet to sit on.

On Wednesday, students will have access to multi-colored Post-It notes and markers which they may use to create uplifting and encouraging messages for themselves and others. We will throw kindness around like confetti and fill our walls with our kind thoughts and words.

On Thursday, teachers and students are encouraged to take their learning outdoors into nature. Students who would like to bring nature into our building are welcome to bring in plants, seashells, rocks and anything else we can SAFELY use to create natural, calming spaces in our building.

On Friday, we will all be encouraged to engage in the activities that calm us and bring joy into our lives like writing, drawing, listening to music, dancing, etc. What is your favorite calming activity?

Together, we make Willow Springs a WONDERFUL place for learning and growing TOGETHER! Quick Links

Eid Mubarak

To those families in our community celebrating the Muslim holiday, Eid, we send you our wishes for a joyful day and year ahead!

Eid al-Fitr, also known as small Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims congregate that morning for Eid prayers. It is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. The most common way to wish someone a Happy Eid al-Fitr is Eid Mubarak, which means “blessed feast” (or festival).

This year's Eid al-Fitr artwork was created by Mark Twain Middle School student Tazrian S. as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students.

Toy Drive Continues...

ALL families are invited to donate to the Ramadan Toy Drive which will benefit both Muslim and non-Muslim families throughout Fairfax County. Toys collected should be new or in good condition and will be donated to the Loudon Islamic Center and to Inova Children's Hospital. You can view the hospital's wish list here.

The deadline for toy collection has been

E X T E N D E D through Friday, April 12th.

This toy drive was planned by both current and former WSES students as a way to do good works in service to the community during the month of Ramadan.

Our April PTA Meeting will be held tomorrow, Thursday, 4/11 at 7:00 PM.

Tomorrow afternoon, you will receive a text message and an email with more information on how to join us for the meeting.

 Region 5's Outstanding New Teacher

Dear Willow Springs families,

Last week students returned to school after Spring Break and they BURST into our building on Wednesday with all the joy, enthusiasm, creativity and thirst for learning and friendships that makes them and Willow Springs such a WONDERFUL place to learn and grow together. It was a short but powerful week as we all worked together to fill the days with opportunities for growth in all areas.

Our week ended on a very high note when our Region 5 Leaders came to our school and announced that our beloved Ms. G has been selected as Region 5's Outstanding New Teacher for the 23-24 school year! We have always known she is a winner and are thrilled to know that others also see how brightly she shines. Ms. G will now go on for consideration in the selection process for the district-wide award.

This week, we look forward to experiencing the solar eclipse together on Monday, honoring Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday and seeing many of you on Thursday at our April PTA meeting. An information email about the solar eclipse was sent to you on Friday via email. ICYMI, check your inbox.

Thank you for sending us your very best every day! #WillowPride
