Girl Scout Bench

Congratulations to Willow Springs' Junior Girl Scout Troop 54063 for completing their Bronze Award Project. They collected and recycled more than 1,000 pounds of plastic to meet the Trex Company Challenge. The Trex Company uses plastic film to create landscape timbers and furniture like the bench in front of our school. Our Girl Scouts learned a great deal about how plastic film decomposes and turns into micro-plastics that pollute air and waterways around the world. They originally were seeking ways to provide benches for our school, but they also wanted to help stop the dangerous plastic pollution. They provided two benches -- one that they built of wood for the field, and the other Trex Bench for Willow Springs' front door.

A Note from the Principal's Desk

Dear Willow Springs families,

This week we completed our 4th week of school. In addition to all the learning taking place, we also had our first PTA meeting and had both a fire drill and a lockdown drill. Our PTA already has many school-wide special events planned, and next week we will send you information on those dates and events. We will also participate in the Boosterthon Fun Run again this year. Stay tuned for all the details!

We are so proud of our Girl Scout troop for their plastic recycling efforts last year and are thankful for the new benches they are providing our school.

Coming up soon is the first early release Monday of the year. That will take place on Monday, September 23rd. Students will be dismissed at 1:00 PM. If you haven't already completed the survey, please see the email from your child's teacher and complete the survey ASAP so we can plan effectively.

We hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!

The Willow Springs PTA is excited to continue the afterschool Garden Club for your children. Fall club participants will learn how to plan, plant, and harvest a garden of flowers and vegetables. They will have the opportunity to help with the Bluebird Trail on school grounds and the Willow Springs Farmer’s Market with local farm partner, Piney Meadow Farm. They will learn how to prepare delicious dishes with seasonal produce. They also will learn about garden science, the importance of pollinators (Monarch butterflies, bees, and others), and, most of all, have fun exploring in nature.

Meetings are Fridays from 4:00-5:30pm, September 13-October 25. Students must be picked up from club promptly at 5:30pm. Boys and girls in 3rd through 6th grade are eligible to participate. We invite any K-2 friends interested in helping in the garden and learning about garden club to join us Friday, October 18 from 4:00-5:30pm with a chaperone (age 13+).

Registration for Garden Club is on a first come, first serve basis, and opens Monday, September 2. There will be a limit of 25 students. Please use the QR Code to access the survey to sign up.

Registration dues are $50 per child. Please pay dues on the PTA website under Clubs by September 13. Registration is not considered complete until dues have been paid. Parents are encouraged to help during club at least once a session. A link to sign up to volunteer will be emailed by the first meeting.

Interested in environmental initiatives at the school (recycling, conservation, reducing waste, etc.)? We are looking for family representatives (parent, grandparent, etc.) for the Willow Springs student-led GREEN CLUB this year. Willow Springs is very proud to have earned a Green Flag designation from Eco-Schools (NWF) for their environmental work last year. Meetings are held before school the first Wednesday of every month beginning in October.

Together We Create What are the paper quilts that are hanging in our hallways? Each square has been uniquely designed by students from all grades, creating a true collaborative art project that they should all be proud of.  We love watching the students find their squares as they pass by a quilt. Make sure they point theirs out during back to school night! - Mrs. Bank and Mrs. Heslep, Art Teachers A Note from the Principal's Desk

Dear Willow Springs families,

As we end the second week of school, we are very happy to report that we have had a very smooth start to this year, school is in full swing, and students have adjusted well to their new routines. Students and staff have been working hard and everyone deserves some rest and relaxation during this 4-day weekend! Remember, school is closed tomorrow and Monday in honor of Labor Day.

As we head into September, we would like to focus on the importance of regular school attendance. September is Attendance Awareness Month. The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance web page for tips and strategies

We wish all of our families a safe and relaxing 4-day weekend. #WillowPride

Math Olympiad

We're excited to invite you back for another year of mathematical exploration and competitions. Our club has had tremendous success in the past, and we're confident that this year will be just as rewarding.

As we prepare for the upcoming tournament season, which kicks off in October, we will be holding several preparatory meetings. During these sessions, students will have the opportunity to train extensively during the club's weekly meetings, learning how to tackle complex math problems, develop logical reasoning, and engage in out-of-the-box thinking. These skills are crucial for success in the Math Olympiad and beyond.

Just like last year, our students will have the chance to participate in approximately 20 tournaments, including those offered by MOEMS, Perennial Math, and NOETICS. Additionally, there will be opportunities to compete in regional championships, with the potential to compete at the national level.

The registration window is narrow, and the seats are limited, so prompt registration to secure your child's spot is essential to ensure all interested students can join. The flyer is attached. If you are interested in joining the club this year, please register your child(ren). There will be a Parents' Interest Meeting on Friday, September 5th at 7:30 PM to go over the details. All registered families will receive the link to the meeting.

Mindful Math Club

The Willow Springs PTA is sponsoring the Mindful Math Club for
current 5th and 6th graders who love challenging math, enjoy
working on math puzzles, and finding different solutions to given
problems.

 Apply math theories to the real world
 Apply creative solutions to challenging math problems
 Discuss advanced concepts NOT in the current curriculum

Friday Fun Today students enjoyed the first Friday morning dance party of the year. A Note from the Principal's Desk

Dear Willow Springs families,

We are very happy to say that we have had a great 1st week back at school. Everyone is settling into the new routines and things have gone very smoothly. Yesterday, we had our first fire drill of the year, and we will have one every month for the rest of the year.

We are so thankful for all of you and for our talented staff who together have made this such a successful week!

We want to remind you that the next two weeks will be short weeks as we all enjoy a long Labor Day weekend. Schools will be closed on Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 2nd.

We are also happy to announce that we will once again participate in the Boosterthon Fun Run fundraiser this fall. This is a fun, outdoor event for the whole school and it is our biggest fundraiser of the year. More information will be coming out soon.

We wish all of our families a safe and relaxing weekend. #WillowPride

The Power of We

Today we got to see and feel the energy and power of our community as we came together during Willow Welcome. It was exciting to see friends and to meet new people. We know this will be another GREAT year at Willow Springs!

First Day of School

Monday, August 19, is the first day of school. See the complete school year calendar.

FCPS parents, students, and staff members are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. Photos will be shared on FCPS' Facebook and Instagram

School Hours

The Willow Springs bell schedule is 9:15 a.m.  – 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

During morning arrival, students are allowed into the building at 9:00 a.m.

  • Parents who bring students to school are not allowed beyond the lobby area during arrival. This helps us keep our school safe.

PickUp Patrol

PickUp Patrol is our online system for managing dismissal every day. It is critical that the information in the system is up to date and accurate. Parents, please take a few minutes to login and update your child's information this weekend so we will be ready for dismissal on Monday!

Bus Riders

You should have received an email from FCPS' Office of Transportation Services with your child's assigned bus route information. Read that email carefully as it tells you where your child's assigned bus stop is and what the AM pick-up and PM drop-off times will be.

Bus routes are also posted in ParentVUE. Log in and look under ParentVUE Accounts to see bus information for your child.

Please be patient during the first week of school as we all adjust to the new routines and traffic patterns. Bus arrival and departure times may not be exact during this transition time.

Remember that a familiar adult must be at the bus stop to receive your Kindergarten age child when he/she returns home on the bus. Kindergarten students are NEVER released from the buses without an adult present at the bus stop.

Kiss and Ride

The student drop off and pick up area is called Kiss and Ride. If you will be driving your child(ren) to school, please be aware that the Kiss and Ride line gets very long, especially during the 1st week of school.

Please plan on arriving early and allow enough time in your schedule to wait in line for as long as it takes.

Work for FCPS Student Monitors Needed

Willow Springs is looking to hire two student monitors. This is a full-time position that provides supervision of students throughout the school day to include, but not limited to, the classroom, hallways, lunch, recess, specials and at arrival/dismissal. Monitor helps maintain order and discipline and assists in managing the behavior of students. Monitors must feel comfortable operating technology and performing administrative and noninstructional duties and can expect to work with both individual and small groups of students during the day. It is another great entry point into a career in FCPS!

If you are interested in becoming a Student Monitor and would like to learn more, please check out this link HERE and contact Assistant  Principals Ipsa Stringer at: [email protected] or Laura Tapper at l[email protected].

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

FCPS elementary schools will have limited early release Mondays during the upcoming school year. The goal is to provide elementary teachers with additional time to meet new professional development requirements for the Virginia Literacy Act.

You can help us with planning for the seven early release Mondays. Please search your email for a short survey from us asking if your child will leave at the early release time on these days or remain at school until the standard dismissal time. Your response will help us in planning activities for students who will need to stay at school until regular dismissal time.

We realize there are many details for us to finalize before our first early release Monday in mid-September. Thank you for your patience, we strive to create a positive and successful experience for students, families, and teachers.
